You all have been so great. Thanks for looking after me (and putting up with me). Helping, giving advise, making me laugh (even howl in laughter). I have so many amazing memories and every single one involves one of you! That’s why we are a family!
Of the staff who, by the way, are such, such nice people I would like to thank you! Everyone who works for the hatchery have been welcoming and helped me settle in so fast. This trip would not be the same if the staff weren’t as good as you guys.

As well as the locals i became good friends with, the woman who owns the shop down the road, all the children at the schools/temples, and generally every helpful, friendly and genuinely nice Sri Lankan person I’ve had the pleasure of meeting.
This trip has been the most perfect thing ive ever done. I have not only learnt a bloody lot about conservation but this kind of trip improves your interpersonal skills, travelling skills and confidence. I am now a better, more well rounded person because of it. There has been scary moments, sad moments, but the well majority has been fantastic. I cant beleive ive done it!!! 3 months! I properly feel like a local now, walking round the towns i have a lot of local friends and all the staff in the shops know me! (And give me local price haha) i think it helps because my tan is TANTASTIC if i do say so myself 😏.
Highlights have been trips on weekends and releasing big turtles. I cant even begin to say how much i love all the volunteers i met. Volunteering is a way of life and very specific people only meet the criteria: happy, open minded, hardworking, accepting, fun and generally nice people and everyone was all those and more.
So in all, sri lanka is now my favourite country. I would recommend any sort of volunteering to everyone because its such a character building exercise! I shall miss it soooo much but i hope to return to the hatchery some time in the future! ☺️

Day 90.

(Sunday) we did nothing!! Just a film day ahhah ive spet all my rupees and i am not getting more out! We just chilled, i did about twenty mins of sunbathing but gave up because it was TOO HOT. It was a nice night though because we released hundreds of turtles, let off fireworks and had a lovely dinner ☺️

With love from sri lanka, Jack.

Day 89.

Today (yesterday because this post is late) we woke up and fed da turtles. We also cleaned nests and generally worked the hatchery. Then we went to GALLE. I love galle its so nice. It was bloody boiling hot though. We had ice creams and iced mochas yummmmm and then we walked around the whole fort before returning home and having dinner. A quick game of 500 and then i was ready for bed!

Day 87/88

well yesterday we had tank cleaning but because there are so many volunteers now we did it so fast!! Didnt take long at all oh and we went crab hunting at night and played heads up which was shamazing. We went teaching and the boys were good for about half of the lesson then plumeted haha.

Today we cleaned turtle nests and fed turtles then we went teaching.. There was only four boys today! Although they are so good at time now haha. It was sad when i had to say goodbye, its the last time!!! 😭😭😭 and now we are chillinnggg waiting for dinner 👌

Day 86.

Well today we woke up (i woke up late) and we buried eggs.. There was a few baby olive ridleys hatch and betmeister put them in the tank. The rest of the day we did a few tours and released in the night. Just a normal chill day which i was happy for because i was tireeeddd. Now we are sotting round the table, playing games, eating biscuits and drinking tea SO CUTE ❤️

Day 85.

Today i had a little bit of a lie in, but still woke up to egg hoppers – a nuce change to the usual bread butter and jam hahaha. Ally, betty and i were deciding what to do and we rang this hotel to see if we could use their facilities for the day. At 500 rupees it was a good deal so we got a tuk tuk. We sunbathed for ages and went in the sea. I had an iced coffee and we discussed what to do with the rest of the day and we just couldnt decide whether to stay or go so we flupped a coin. Heads! So we headed back to the house at around 2:30pm.

There is a vintage car fair in Galle today and it seemed like a nice idea to go to see them! Although it did take about 40 minutes to catch a bus, betty and i jumped into an A/C bus and off we set … We heard thunderstorms intermittently through the morning and as we travelled south everything was getting wetter… I think its betty. Everytime she goes to galle it rains hahaha 😹

Anyways we made it to galle after alllll that! I went to the ATM and then we got a tuk tuk to the fort.. It was raining a little bit and we couldnt see any cars .. Got worries but finally we got to pedlar street and we found them! They were all very nice ☺️ austins mostly but good to see a lot of british things in one place! So yeah we found this lavazza coffee shop and that was soooo nice, i got a bloody massive iced mocha (in LOVE with iced coffee now) and some garlic bread with cheese yummmm. Betty found a guitar and started to play it we looked like such coffee shop junkies it was amazing.

We then went to see the vintage cars drive off, got a bus and now we are back at home just chilling 👌☺️

Day 80-84.

Well basically my phone broke AGAIN. I hate this phone soooo much. But i got it fixed AGAIN. So a quick recap of the week.. Throughout the week we fed the turtles and on wednesday we cleaned the tanks (oh always the hardest day) BUT. On wednesday we went out for Ally’s birthday 😄 that was really nice, i had a beef steak! The first beef ive had in three months and it was aaaaamazing. We all got extremely drunk and then went back to dudleys for a house party where we played deinking games and got more and more drunk. We got back to the house and then a bloody turtle was on the beach! It was goong back to the sea so we could properly see how big it was and its bloody big!

Today we worked in the morning and then we went to galle, had some spaghetti and an iced mocha – beaut. It rained alot though and the bus back was PACKED so we had to stand for an hour, when i say we i mean just me haha 😆

So yeah nice week, cant beleive its only ten days until i leave!!!

Day 78/79.

Well, unfortunately yesterday when i was sunbathing, i had my phone on my towel and i think the sun baked it… So the screen just does what it wants and its extremely hard to do ANYTHING. Luckily, Pernille has kindly lent me her laptop and i can update you all now.

Yesterday I just chilled out, sunbathed for about half an hour… then spent the rest of the time inside watching movies and sleeping haha a do nothing day completely.

Today however was a lot more exciting. Me, pernille, ally and franzisca all went to Hikkaduwa to go body boarding.. we got there and sunbathed for a bit then pernille and i went body boarding.. ITS SO MUCH FUN. We spent an hour in the sea and i nearly drowned a few times but i got it in the end. Then we dried off and had lunch – a nice chicken burger for me 🙂

THEN pernille and i got TATTOOS!!!! I got ‘Jack’ in sinhala and it loooks niiiiiceee! deffo happy with it.. its on my left foot 🙂 I will try upload a pic laters if my phone behaves. it took AGES but it was worth it in the end. Also Pernille insisted on Abba being played whilst she had her little turtle done 🙂 Then we got back home at 7:15pm and had a late tea and now we are ready to watch The Dictator at 9pm! GOOD DAY!

lhlhhhhhdhhe

Day 77.

Today was a pretty relaxing day. We fed the turtles and about 100000 kids came today as well!! Ally and I were srurrounded by bloody children, they were more interested in us than the turtles?!! And then we just chilled out, had a good chat at lunch and i had a nap. Then i went for a walk and Dave took us for a couple of beers ✌️🙌👌 yaaay. And then we had tea and i practiced Danish with pernille and dave.

Day 73/74/75/76.

Yeah i got a bit lazy about this blog.. SORRY GUYS. This week has just been a normal week!

Exciting things that have happened are: 7 green turtles came up to our beach at the same time (we didnt get woken up though gutted).. I honestly cant remember anything else haha i am sooo tored recently! Oh yeah my face burned and now i look like a leopard because half my face is peeling and im a mix of brown and white and red 😹 gutted!! Its been a nice week for weather and ive been sunbathing a lot. Teaching is as usual, kids behaving badly and wanting to play constantly 🙈

Last night we had some very unfortunate news that franzisca’s grandma passed away 😪 RIP to her, and i hope franzisca is ok.

Now i am just relaxing waiting to go teaching so i shall now update the blog everyday!
